FOCUS FRIDAY: BEE MINE

Here we are,
back to
Black-Eyed Susan.
But
this time,
she has a
VISITOR.
A visitor
with
quite a
STING.
Please
Bee Mine.

Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar is as important
to the child as it is to the caterpillar.

UPDATE: As the result of one of the comments on this photo, I realize now that I misidentified this little insect as a bee. Thank you, Hannah, for your helpful comment in pointing out that this bee-like impersonator is a HOVERFLY

  3. That is quite the interesting Bee ... and he does seem to have a powerful stinger. Great shot, edits and your quote says a lot about you ... and I couldn't agree more :)

  7. There are flies that mimic bees, their eyes wrap around kind of like a flyer's helmet, their antennae are short and stubby and come from a single place between their eyes. They are Diptera, so have 2 wings instead of 4 like a bee. They have smooth instead of fuzzy bodies. They have wimpy little legs without pollen collecting structures. They are beneficial polllinators and some are predators of bad bugs, though some parasitize ground bee nests. But it is a very cute shot of a Hover fly.

    1. Wow! I stand corrected. I googled an image of a hoverfly, and, Hannah, you are absolutely right! It seems though that, although the markings and description match my photo, where is the stinger? Isn't that a stinger in my photo? Thanks for being so up on your insects. You helped us all learn something! Smiles, Linda
