FOCUS FRIDAY: BEAUTIFUL WEED

The much maligned dandelion is truly a Beautiful Weed.

Rather than just cursing those infernal pests that pepper lawns,
have you ever really examined one up close?

Look at the incredible delicacy of the dandelion:
the perfectly scalloped tips of each petal,
the curlicues pointing toward the
gorgeous chrysanthemum-like curving petals at the center,
and its glorious and happy color!

This beauty was one of a few stars on our front lawn, much to my husband's chagrin.
Oh well.
They don't last long, and I think they add a lovely sunny look to an otherwise boring lawn.

  1. Personally, I love Dandelions, they are so pretty and cheerful and they are also a good food source - Dandelion Bread, Dandelion Jelly, Dandelion Gravy - these are just a few things that can be made with Dandelions.

  2. Oh my goodness!!!!! I thought I was the only one who liked this little yellow flowers that come up every year in spite of the poisons people spray on their lawns. I love to see them in my front and back yard, I love the way the adorn an otherwise boring green space. My husband just hates them but I think they are beautiful, if it was for me, I would leave them alone, I would love to see the entire yard covered with them. Every year I witness what I think, it's a loosing battle fought by everybody trying to get rid of them. They spray and apply weed killer, which I think it's so wrong for so many reasons, I always think of the little birds who don't know any better and are looking for worms or insects to feed their babies, it's just so unfair.
And, don't you love when this yellow flowers turn into this gorgeous, puffy balls of seeds, that fly in the wind, unafraid of where they are going to land, when you blow on them? Each seed attached to this lovely parachute, perfect any which way you look at it. Mother Nature sure is wise.
So, lets hear it for the humble, resilient, brave, relentless, beautiful Dandelion, it too deserves a place in this world. Resign your manicured lawns, it's not shameful to have a few of this little troopers sharing a space in your back yard.

  4. They are pretty- I don't see as many of those in my yard as I do the red clovers, but I love their bright yellow coloring.

  5. I love dandelions. I know they are considered a weed, but I don't care. They are bright and vibrant and determined. They grow like crazy up here in the Pacific Northwest. Our HOA doesn't allow them or clover on the front lawn, but I let the dandelions have at it in the back.

Thank you for linking up to the Macro Monday Mixer. I appreciate it. Have a great week.

  8. Is that actually a weed? How lovely. I would call it a flower :)

  9. Isn't a weed just a plant somewhere that you don't want it to be? If you want them then by default they are no longer weeds (Isn't that a liberating thought!)

  10. Actually as it turns out, dandelions are edible and very nutritious, when not sprayed with chemicals of course. When you see a photo up close like this it looks like a chrysanthemum. Great photo!!

  11. It is overlooked for it's beauty and grace, I think.

  16. I actually used ours to make a homemade salve :) Dandelions are great for healing. They do get ugly when they turn into leggy stalks, but, as you said, that doesn't last long. Well worth the few weeks of "bald" dandelion stalks in my opinion ;)
